Routine Vet Services

Small Animal Consultations

At Murwillumbah Vet Clinic, when you come in for a consultation, you will not only see the Vet, but we also have a consulting nurse to assist you with advice and to help with any concerns you may have.

Did you know that obesity is one of the big killers with dogs, cats, and rabbits too! Make an appointment with one of our nurses for a free consultation to discuss weight control programs for your pet. We also offer free consultations with our nursing staff to discuss dental issues, arthritis and behavioural problems.

Pet Vaccinations

Vaccination is a critical part of a proper preventative healthcare program to help protect your pet against several serious and life threatening infectious diseases. We provide dog, cat and rabbit vaccinations and can tailor a program that is suitable for your animal. We also send you reminders when your pets vaccinations are due.

Desexing

There are important benefits associated with having your pet desexed. Health benefits include the reduction of some malignant cancers in the testes, prostate, ovaries, cervix or uterus as well as the prevention of infection of the uterus , or pyometra which is where the uterus fill with pus, common in older entire female dogs. Social benefits include a reduction in territorial behaviours such as urine marking, reduction in noisy calling behaviours, anti-social behaviour and in particular wandering which can lead to your pet being lost, harming native wildlife or having a accident with a car. Lastly, financial benefits include the prevention of costs associated with birthing or treating the medical conditions listed above. Desexing your pet also means you get a discount on your council pet registration fees.

At Murwillumbah Veterinary Clinic we are proud to follow the WSAVA guidelines for pain relief for all our desexing patients.

Pet Microchipping

In NSW, all cats and dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away, whichever comes first. MVC can microchip your pet and add its number to the NSW Pet Registry. No personal information is stored on the microchip, only the unique identification number.

Parasite Prevention

We stock a range of products suitable to protect your pet against major external and internal parasites. By purchasing in clinic, you have the added benefit of expert local advice and tailoring parasite prevention to best suit your situation and your budget.

Pet Nutrition & Food

MVC stocks a range of Hills and Royal Canine dog food including prescription diets used to better treat and prevent certain diseases. We stock OXBOW products and Critical Care powder for rabbits and other pocket pets and also Vegan dog and cat food.

Surgical Vet Services

Veterinary Surgery

Dr Joan Gibbons, Dr Sam Walker, Dr Cristina Walker, Dr Arjuna Godvindasamy, Dr Tanis Aiton and the team provide a full range of soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, and have a strong interest in general surgery and surgical oncology (cancer surgery).

Soft tissue surgery is any surgery not involving bones and joints. This surgery takes many different forms, as there are many different soft tissues in the body. The type of surgery also varies with the intention of the procedure. It may be preventative (such as desexing surgery), curative (e.g. abscess surgery), diagnostic (such as taking biopsy samples to find out exactly what a type of tissue is) or palliative (e.g. reducing the size of a tumour to make an animal more comfortable).

Some common soft tissue surgeries performed at Murwillumbah Veterinary Clinic are de-sexing surgery, aural haematomas, mass removals, and injury repairs.

Orthopaedic surgery is surgery on the bones and joints. We frequently perform cruciate repairs, and correct fractures.

Every patient who undergoes surgery at Murwillumbah Veterinary Clinic is given a pre-surgical examination, has intravenous fluids to support blood pressure, and is monitored closely by veterinarians and nurses before, during, and after the procedure to ensure maximum safety.

Pet Dentistry including Dental Radiography

Dentistry is a rapidly growing area of veterinary science. We have seen a greater awareness over the years of its importance to the overall health of the animals we treat.

Just like humans, pets’ teeth need looking after too! The health of their teeth and gums has a significant impact on their overall quality of life. Imagine how your mouth would feel, and smell, if you never brushed your teeth. Imagine having a really bad toothache and not being able to tell anyone about it!

Diagnostic Medicine

We pride ourselves on our diagnostic medicine. With access to in clinic pathology machines, urinalysis, and microscopy, we are able to diagnose any issues your pet may have with more accuracy and efficiency than ever before. We have a digital x-ray machine with also assists with a speedy diagnosis.

Digital X-Ray

X-rays are not just for looking at broken bones. We mostly think of x-rays as something to check if there is a broken bone, but x-rays can tell us so much more.

We use x-rays to examine the size, shape and position of organs in the body. We also use x-rays to check out if there is foreign material in the body – such as bladder stones, tennis balls or even bullets!

Sometimes we use a technique called contrast radiology to help us better determine what is going on inside our patients. This form of x-rays uses contrast medium given orally to our patients to highlight or contrast specific areas that may not show up very well with plain x-rays.

Murwillumbah Veterinary clinic has a state-of-the-art digital radiograph. This allows us to get the best possible images of your pet for accuracy of diagnosis. With our digital x-ray system you can even ask us for a USB or disc of the radiographs so you can have your own copy.

Clinical Pathology

MVC has in house blood machines as well as general and dental radiography units. This allow us to get rapid results to make the best treatment choices for your pet.Our vets have a keen interest in pathology and routinely use these skills when working up cases involving skin, ears and lumps.

Other Vet Services

Pet Insurance

Some veterinary care and other associated costs, such as treatment of tick paralysis and snake bites or car accidents can be quite substantial.

Pet insurance is available for dog’s from as little as $1.30 per day or 75 cents a day for cats.

We do not offer insurance ourselves but are happy to provide you with brochures and information. Pet insurance allows you to choose the best treatment for your pet without having to worry whether you can afford it.

House Calls

Our vets are available for house calls including end of life when both pets and their families feel more comfortable in the familiar surrounds of home.

Pet Pharmacy

Our in house pharmacy is comprehensive and we are also happy to source special orders. Our relationship with compounding pharmacies allows us to provide more palatable and easy to administer dosing options of many drugs.

In house Progesterone

We now have in house Progesterone testing available to assess the timing of mating and whelping in breeding bitches.

Exotic Animal Care

Ferrets, Rabbits, Rats, Mice, Guinea Pigs, and Birds are all welcome at Murwillumbah Veterinary Clinic, where our team are happy to treat your exotic pet for any issues.

We carry a wide range of preventative medicines for these exotic pets, and also stock high quality foods that will keep them in tip top condition.

We perform surgeries such as de-sexing, tumour removal and dentistry for many of these animals.

Cat Only Areas

To reduce stress on cats visiting the clinic, we have a dedicated feline and small pet waiting room and hospitalisation ward. We use Feliway and Adaptil synthetic calming pheromones to make your pets visit as stress free as possible.
